Launching of the Dasa Raja Dharma

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) in Sri Lanka launched a groundbreaking research project on June 11th, 2024, aimed at revitalizing leadership practices by drawing upon the ancient Buddhist philosophy of Dasaraja Dharma, the Ten Kingly Virtues. Recognizing the pressing need for ethical and effective leadership, CIPM seeks to develop a comprehensive leadership module based on these timeless principles.

Dasaraja Dharma encompasses virtues such as generosity, morality, sacrifice, honesty, gentleness, austerity, non-anger, non-violence, patience, and non-opposition. These values provide a framework for cultivating leaders who prioritize integrity, accountability, and the greater good. In a context where corruption and ethical lapses have marred the political and bureaucratic landscape, the relevance of Dasaraja Dharma is undeniable.

CIPM President, Mr. Ken Vijayakumar, envisions this initiative as a catalyst for positive change. By integrating the wisdom of Dasaraja Dharma into modern leadership practices, CIPM seeks to empower individuals and organizations to create a more ethical and effective leadership paradigm. This approach not only addresses the shortcomings of contemporary leadership but also contributes to the development of context-specific management models that resonate with Sri Lankan culture and values.

The research project has garnered significant support from CIPM members, academics, researchers, and invitees. Dr Yashoda Bandara, Senior Lecturer at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, and Dr Rasika Priyankara, CIPM Member and Senior Lecturer at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, have been instrumental in driving this study forward, and their exceptional contributions have been pivotal to its success.

By embracing the timeless wisdom of Dasaraja Dharma, CIPM paves the way for a brighter, more ethical future for Sri Lanka, where leaders at all levels are committed to serving the nation with integrity and compassion. The CIPM initiative is poised to impact Human Resource Management, providing invaluable resources and training programs based on the research outcomes. Further, this research has encouraged CIPM Students & Members to explore integrating religious

philosophies such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam into modern management practices, ultimately leading to social-religious harmony and national development.
