Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (IPM) was founded in 1959 by a small group of professionals with the objective of developing and promoting the profession of personnel management. The Institute was subsequently incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1976, and its name was amended by Act No. 31 of 2018 as the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM).

The prestigious CIPM Graduation Ceremony 2024, held at the grand BMICH, Colombo, marked a momentous occasion for over 500 proud graduates. It was a day filled with emotion, inspiration, and the spirit of achievement as these graduates embarked on the next chapter of their careers in Human Resource Management.

CIPM Sri Lanka, a leader in HR education, welcomed the graduates into its esteemed alumni community, celebrating their hard work, perseverance, and dedication. The day began with an uplifting speech by Mr. Priyantha Ranasinghe, President of CIPM Sri Lanka, who congratulated the graduates and highlighted CIPM’s mission to develop HR professionals ready to lead and innovate in today’s complex business environment.

The ceremony continued with a keynote address by the Chief Guest, Snr. Prof. Udith K. Jayasinghe, Vice-Chancellor of Wayamba University. He inspired the audience by underscoring the vital role that HR professionals play in fostering organizational success and innovation. This was followed by the Guest of Honour, Ms. Olivia BELLEMERE, Counsellor for Cooperation and Culture at the French Embassy, who encouraged graduates to think globally and embrace diversity in their careers.

A special highlight of the event was an address by Mr. Chethiya Rathnaweera, who spoke passionately about the numerous benefits of CIPM membership, from access to cutting-edge HR resources to networking opportunities that open doors to both national and international HR communities.

The emotional heart of the ceremony was the Valedictory Speech by Ms. Harshi Rangika Rajapaksha, the top-performing graduate and CIPM Gold Medalist 2024. Her inspiring words reflected the dedication of all graduates and her gratitude to the faculty, family, and fellow students who supported her throughout her journey.

The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Dr. Neil Bogahalande, Hony. Secretary of CIPM Sri Lanka. He expressed deep appreciation to all the dignitaries, CIPM members, staff, and most importantly, the graduates for their contribution to making the day a grand success.

This day marked not just the end of an academic journey, but the beginning of a lifelong connection with CIPM Sri Lanka, a place where future HR leaders are nurtured and empowered. Here’s to the next generation of HR professionals ready to make their mark on the world!

Launching of the Dasa Raja Dharma

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) in Sri Lanka launched a groundbreaking research project on June 11th, 2024, aimed at revitalizing leadership practices by drawing upon the ancient Buddhist philosophy of Dasaraja Dharma, the Ten Kingly Virtues. Recognizing the pressing need for ethical and effective leadership, CIPM seeks to develop a comprehensive leadership module based on these timeless principles.

Dasaraja Dharma encompasses virtues such as generosity, morality, sacrifice, honesty, gentleness, austerity, non-anger, non-violence, patience, and non-opposition. These values provide a framework for cultivating leaders who prioritize integrity, accountability, and the greater good. In a context where corruption and ethical lapses have marred the political and bureaucratic landscape, the relevance of Dasaraja Dharma is undeniable.

CIPM President, Mr. Ken Vijayakumar, envisions this initiative as a catalyst for positive change. By integrating the wisdom of Dasaraja Dharma into modern leadership practices, CIPM seeks to empower individuals and organizations to create a more ethical and effective leadership paradigm. This approach not only addresses the shortcomings of contemporary leadership but also contributes to the development of context-specific management models that resonate with Sri Lankan culture and values.

The research project has garnered significant support from CIPM members, academics, researchers, and invitees. Dr Yashoda Bandara, Senior Lecturer at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, and Dr Rasika Priyankara, CIPM Member and Senior Lecturer at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, have been instrumental in driving this study forward, and their exceptional contributions have been pivotal to its success.

By embracing the timeless wisdom of Dasaraja Dharma, CIPM paves the way for a brighter, more ethical future for Sri Lanka, where leaders at all levels are committed to serving the nation with integrity and compassion. The CIPM initiative is poised to impact Human Resource Management, providing invaluable resources and training programs based on the research outcomes. Further, this research has encouraged CIPM Students & Members to explore integrating religious

philosophies such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam into modern management practices, ultimately leading to social-religious harmony and national development.
