Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (IPM) was founded in 1959 by a small group of professionals with the objective of developing and promoting the profession of personnel management. The Institute was subsequently incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1976, and its name was amended by Act No. 31 of 2018 as the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM).

The National HRM Standards have officially launched in Sri Lanka – “A major moment in our history that will shape HR practices for years to come.”
The inauguration ceremony of the launching of National HRM Standards at Cosmic by Citrus was a truly momentous occasion, bringing together esteemed professionals, academics, and leaders from various sectors. It was held on the 30th of April 2024 at 5:00 PM and witnessed by many.

In an exciting partnership, CIPM and SLSI have come together to set national standards in HRM! This historic initiative showcases their commitment to elevating HR practices in Sri Lanka and keeping them in line with global benchmarks.

The successful digital launch of the National HRM Standards, with the esteemed presence of Chief Guest Hon. Manusha Nanayakkara, Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment, and Guest of Honour Dr. Asanga Ranasinghe, Chairman of Sri Lanka Standards Institution. The event was graced by Mr. Ken Vijayakumar, President of CIPM Sri Lanka, Mr. Jayantha Amarasinghe, Immediate Past President of CIPM Sri Lanka, and Mr. Dammika Fernando, Chairman of the Sectoral Committee on Formulation of National HRM Standards. We are proud to set new benchmarks for HRM practices in Sri Lanka.

Under the visionary leadership of Mr. Jayantha Amarasinghe, Immediate Past President of CIPM, the Sectoral Committee for Developing National Standards on Human Resource Management was formed. This esteemed committee, comprising nationally and internationally acclaimed HRM professionals, worked tirelessly to formulate country-specific HRM standards.

Mr. Dhammika Fernando, Chairman of the Sectoral Committee and a distinguished figure in the HR landscape, led the charge, supported by a team of experts including Mr. Priyantha Ranasinghe, Prof. Ajantha Dharmasiri, Mr. Aruna Jayasekera, Mr. C. Hewapattini, Dr. Chandana Jayawardhane, Mr. Dhammika Kobbekaduwa, Mr. Sanjaya Walpita, Dr. Sanjaya Jayasuriya and  Ms. Ruwani Senevirathne (Secretary). Each member contributed their unique insights and expertise, ensuring that the National HRM Standards uphold the highest standards of professionalism and innovation.

Under the steadfast guidance of CIPM President Mr. Ken Vijayakumar and with the oversight of the Executive Council, the national project reached its fruition. Mr. Vijayakumar expressed his excitement at seeing these standards come to life, emphasizing their role in maintaining the integrity of the HR profession and establishing a standard of excellence across the country.

The collaborative effort between CIPM and SLSI resulted in the creation of eleven comprehensive standards covering key areas of HRM, meticulously crafted to address the evolving needs of the Sri Lankan corporate landscape. Ranging from SLS 1787:2024 to SLS 1796:2024, these standards set a new benchmark for professionalism and standardization in HR practices.

With the approval of these standards by the board of SLSI, they are now set to be published and promulgated, ushering in a new era of excellence and innovation in HR practices across Sri Lanka. This landmark achievement reflects the commitment of CIPM and SLSI to foster organizational success and societal prosperity through the advancement of HRM practices.

With the introduction of these standards, CIPM and SLSI pave the way for a future where HR practices in Sri Lanka drive not only organizational success but also contribute significantly to societal prosperity, setting a shining example for the global HR community.

The meeting was held among CIPM and the Ministry of Labour to conduct a National Survey on Labour Demand. At this meeting, two national-level research project reports conducted by CIPM on ‘Female Migrant Domestic Workers: Challenges and Prospects in Sri Lankan Perspective’ and ‘Attracting Sri Lankan Youth to Technical and Vocational Education: The Way Forward’ were handed over to the Hon. Labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara by CIPM President Mr. Ken Vijayakumar and Chairperson of the Research Committee Prof. Prasadini Gamage.

The CEOs’ Forum 2023

The CIPM Sri Lanka successfully held a CEOs’ Forum on the theme “People First Culture inspired by CEOs” on 23rd March 2023 at the Shangri-La hotel. The event emerged as a grand success with 100+ CEOs from multiple industries gracing the occasion.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Bingumal Thewarathanthri, CEO – Standard Chartered Bank, Sri Lanka made an inspiring and excellent keynote address which was highly applauded by a professional audience. The panel discussion following the keynote address was highly interactive with the sharing of thought-provoking views. The panel consisted of Mr. Bingumal Thewarathanthri, CEO – Standard Chartered Bank PLC, Dr. Samitha Perera, CEO – CBL Foods International Pvt Ltd, Ms. Shiromal Cooray, Chairman and Managing Director – Jetwing Travels (Pvt) Ltd, and Mr. Chevaan Daniel, Executive Group Director – Capital Maharaja Group while the discussion was moderated by Dr. Nalin Jayasuriya, Chairman, McQuire Rens Global Consulting (Pvt) Ltd.

The president of CIPM Sri Lanka Mr. ken Vijayakumar, the Chairman of the CEOs’ Forum and the Vice President of CIPM, Mr. Priyantha Ranasinghe welcome the delegates. Immediate Past President, Office Bearers and council members of the Executive Council of CIPM Sri Lanka, and Members of the Standing Committee on HR Profession as a Leading Strategic Partner for Organizational Excellence, the CEO, Directors, and Senior Management staff of the institute were also in attendance.

 

MoU with University of Kelaniya

The CIPM, the nation’s leader in Human Resource Management, signed an MOU with Kelaniya  University, a renowned university in Sri Lanka, on 16th March 2023 at the Senate House of the Kelaniya University to collectively develop Human Resouce Profession for the benefit of the HR professionals,  managerial community and HR students and in the country. The Vice-Chancellor, Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva; Registrar, Mr.K.K.K.Dharmathilka, Dean Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, Dr. P.N.D Fernando; Head, Senior Lecturer Department of Commerce and Financial Management Mr. M.M.M. Shamil and academic staff of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies participated at Ceremony.  CEO Mr U.A.C Obeysekere, Director of Professional and Academics Affairs Mr. G.Weerathunga, Head of Business School Mr. Anushka Earskin,  Head of Finance Ms. Wathasla Naddeeshani, and Executive  Media & Digital Marketing T. Krishanth represented the CIPM at the Ceremony.
